Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services
The Honourable Tracy Davis

Queenslanders celebrate National Volunteer Week

Communities Minister Tracy Davis has thrown her support behind Queensland’s volunteers and acknowledged their enormous daily contribution, during National Volunteer Week (14-20 May).

Ms Davis said the state’s standard of living would be much lower if not for the work volunteers perform.

“Our 1.2 million volunteers help make Queensland a great place to live,” Ms Davis said.

“Whether it is a Meals on Wheels helper or the coach of the local junior football team, each person improves our daily way of life.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of Queensland’s volunteers for their contribution.

“Volunteering is essential to the strength and resilience of communities.

“It also adds significantly to the Queensland economy with the most recent data estimating the figure to be $13.4 billion per annum.”

Ms Davis said National Volunteer Week was the largest celebration of volunteers in Australia, providing an opportunity to highlight their role in our communities and acknowledge their involvement.

“We’re showing our support by providing $22,500 sponsorship to Volunteering Queensland to deliver a range of events to celebrate,” she said.

“We have sponsored the ‘One Big Thank You’ event where volunteers from across the State were linked together to receive the recognition they deserve.

“Other events include a community games in Logan, a Volunteering Web Series that will start new conversations and inspire young people to get involved and a yarning circle exploring what volunteering means to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.”

Ms Davis said this year’s theme was ‘Volunteers – every one counts’.
