“Repairs on the $80million safety upgrade are now complete, making the range fully accessible under extreme weather conditions to the more than 20,000 vehicles that use the highway daily.

The works included:

  • cutting the slopes back to a 45 degree angle and protecting them from further erosion with the installation of new drainage
  • safety works to help reduce the risk of future rock falls and landslides
  • turf reinforcement mats to protect slopes from erosion
  • rock fencing, and construction of a 350m-long rock protection wall
  • improved curves and widening of the existing carriageway
  • Upgrading culverts and drains to ensure effective storm water movement
  • A compost blanket cover containing the seeds of local native grasses, shrubs and trees
