Newman Government reaffirms commitment to Commonwealth-funded NDIS
Disability Services Minister Tracy Davis reaffirmed the Newman Government’s support for the intent of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and renewed calls for the scheme to be supported by Commonwealth funding at the Make NDIS Real rally in Brisbane today.
“We are committed to getting the best outcomes for Queenslanders with a disability and we support the principle of a Commonwealth-funded NDIS,” Ms Davis said.
“It has always been the position of the Newman Government that the Commonwealth should fund the NDIS as they have the ability to raise the revenue to ensure that Australians with disabilities receive the ongoing support they require.
“This would also ensure a nationally consistent framework.
“I note with interest the Prime Minister’s announcement today of funding launch sites for the scheme but we still want the Commonwealth to explain how it is going to fund the overall initiative.
“We are committed to working with other States and Territories to ensure the NDIS is funded and we support the process currently being undertaken by the Council of Australian Governments.
“There is strong support for the NDIS in the community and I believe it needs to have a particular focus on Queenslanders with a disability living in regional and rural areas.”
Ms Davis said as the scheme’s full implementation is still several years away, she would also continue to focus on revitalising front line services for Queenslanders living with a disability.
