Support builds for domestic and family violence campaign
Communities Minister, Tracy Davis, has urged individuals, businesses and community organisations across Queensland to take a stand against domestic violence during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in 2012.
More than 60 sponsors and community partners will support this year’s statewide awareness campaign, which is held annually each May to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and strengthen local support for prevention initiatives.
Ms Davis said domestic and family violence crosses the social divide and should never be tolerated.
“Queenslanders must clearly send the message that violence against women, children and men in all its guises is completely unacceptable,” Ms Davis said.
“We want every community in Queensland to stand together and speak out against domestic and family violence.
“This year, community groups, sporting clubs, media outlets, businesses and local councils are joining with the Queensland Government to encourage everyday people to take action and support people affected by domestic and family violence.”
Across the state, 28 organisations are sharing in $150,000 of funding to host awareness raising activities, projects and events during May.
“Some events are entirely supported by sponsors and I thank them for getting on board and helping drive the message to communities across Queensland,” Ms Davis said.
“There are a wide variety of events scheduled for the duration of May throughout the state, with many towns and cities holding candle lighting ceremonies, educational community fun days, forums, breakfasts or movie nights.
“By becoming aware of the warning signs and being available for a friend or neighbour to talk about their situation, we can start to make a difference.
“The more of us who speak out, the more powerful the message.
