JP recognised for long service to Toowoomba community

Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts has congratulated long-serving Justice of the Peace Andrew Wielandt who recently celebrated 25 years of service to the local community.

Andrew became a Justice of the Peace (JP) when he was only 20 years old. His decision to become a JP was motivated by a strong sense of community and his desire to give back.

As a young man, Andrew recalls the difficulty he had trying to find a local Justice of the Peace to witness documents for his first passport. It was at that point, he realised what an important role JPs play in our community and the need for others to volunteer to keep this valuable community service going.

Mr Watts said the service JPs provide to the local community cannot be underestimated, as everyone accesses the services of a JP at least once in their lives.

“JPs perform a diverse range of community legal services, often making themselves accessible to the community in local shopping centres, support agencies, businesses and offices,” Mr Watts said.

“JPs are held in very high regard in our community – this service gives time-poor individuals an opportunity to give back to the community in a unique way.

“I encourage anyone who has a high standard of professionalism and an interest in the legal system to get involved by becoming a JP.”
