Independent inquiry needed on nursing home Coronavirus case

Friday, May 15, 2020

The LNP is calling for an independent inquiry into how a nurse with COVID-19 was found to be working at the state government-run North Rockhampton Nursing Centre.

“My thoughts are with the nurses, the staff, residents of the nursing centre and their families who are now confronting a very uncertain time,” LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said.

“Nursing home residents are particularly vulnerable to coronavirus, which is why this case in a state-run facility is very concerning.

“An independent inquiry is required to find out what led to the health of these residents potentially being put at risk.

“I am concerned that a nurse in a state government run aged care facility was symptomatic and contagious whilst looking after vulnerable residents.

“Either the proper procedures aren’t in place or they weren’t followed.

“Serious questions need answering and an independent inquiry is the best way to get to the bottom of what happened at this nursing home.”

LNP Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates hit out at Annastacia Palaszczuk’s lack of leadership.

“The Premier clearly would have known about this issue and should have addressed the public in full about it,” Ms Bates said.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk held a press conference this morning and failed to give any details about the seriousness of this case.

“Queenslanders deserve to be treated like adults, not children.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk clearly has no idea about what is happening in aged care facilities operated by her government.

“Less than a month ago, Annastacia Palaszczuk was caught out in a hypocritical headline grabbing stunt against aged care providers when government-run facilities she is responsible for were doing the same thing.

“The LNP has previously called for a full inquiry into state government-run aged care facilities.

“Labor’s sham inquiry into aged care failed to adequately look at state government-run aged care facilities.”

LNP Candidate for Keppel Adrian de Groot said the situation was distressing news for the Rockhampton community.

“Like everyone else in this community, my thoughts are with the residents of the nursing home and their friends and family,” Mr de Groot said.

“The community deserves answers, which is why an independent inquiry is needed immediately.”
