The LNP is calling for urgent action to lift vaccination rates in Queensland’s Indigenous communities to protect our First Nations people.
As part of a vaccination blitz, Leader of the Opposition David Crisafulli today visited Lockhart River and witnessed first-hand the success the community has achieved in increasing vaccine numbers.
Mr Crisafulli praised local community leaders who provided clear and concise information to locals as soon as the vaccine became available.
Latest data shows 66.3% of Lockhart River’s population is fully vaccinated, and 74.4% have had their first dose.
This is in contrast to statewide figures which show less than half the population in Queensland’s Indigenous communities are fully vaccinated.
In some areas, it’s less than 30%.
Mr Crisafulli said ensuring our most vulnerable were vaccinated must be the State Government’s first priority.
“We are failing our First Nations people if we do not lift vaccination rates in these communities,” he said.
“It’s time the State Government improved access and provided confidence to lift the rates in these communities.”
Mr Crisafulli’s visit to Lockhart River follows a trip to Yarrabah and Woorabinda in recent weeks. In those communities, vaccination rates are languishing with local leaders asking for more frequent access to the vaccine.
“With just a month to go before the border opens it is critical vaccination rates are lifted,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“I fear we are at risk of a Northern Territory style outbreak in at risk communities if we do not act now.
“This is our window of opportunity.
“We must work with Indigenous communities to get the jab.
“We need to mobilise clinics in these communities as a matter of urgency.
“We need to have trusted voices explaining these vaccines are safe.
“Protecting First Australians must be a priority.”
